Vegas Golden Knights Win Big, But Need Help to Retain First Place and Win Presidents' Trophy
The Vegas Golden Knights took care of business in their last regular season game, controlling a big 6-0 win in San Jose over the Sharks who failed to make the playoffs for the 2nd straight season. As of today, the VGK are still in first place, but unfortunately the 2nd place Colorado Avalanche control their own destiny.
VGK goalie Marc-Andre Fleury got his 6th shutout of the season and the Golden Knights had goals from Alex Pietrangelo and Keegan Kolesar in the first period, William Carrier and Jonathan Marchessault scored in the second and Dylan Sikura scored twice in the final period.
The Avs had a big 6-0 win of their own at home against the Los Angeles Kings, to stay within striking distance of the VGK's first place status. They play the Kings one more time tonight with first place and the President's Trophy on the line - but more importantly seeding in the playoffs as well.
The Vegas Golden Knights are still two points ahead in the standings, but if Colorado beats LA again on Thursday, they will win the tie-breaker for first place by virtue of most regular season wins. If the Kings beat Colorado on Thursday, the VGK will host the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the playoffs, if the Avs win, the VGK will be playing the 3rd place Minnesota Wild.
The VGK and all of their fans are rooting for the Kings tonight! #GoKingsGo #VGK
